סוזט היידן אלגין (באנגלית: Suzette Haden Elgin; נולדה בשם פטרישיה אן וילקינס (Patricia Anne Wilkins)‏; 18 בנובמבר 1936 – 27 בינואר 2015) הייתה סופרת מדע בדיוני ובלשנית אמריקאית. היא יסדה את האגודה לשירת מדע בדיוני, ונחשבת לדמות חשובה בתחום שפות מתוכננות במדע הבדיוני. היצירות המוכרות שלה כוללות את ספר המדע הבדיוני, "שפת אם", שאף תורגם לעברית, וסדרת העיון Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense.

ביוגרפיה

פטרישיה אן וילקינס נולדה ב-1936 בג'פרסון סיטי שבמיזורי.

היא למדה באוניברסיטת קליפורניה בסן דייגו (UCSD) ב-1960, והחלה לכתוב מדע בדיוני על מנת לשלם את שכר הלימוד. היא סיימה דוקטורט בבלשנות, והייתה הראשונה ב-UCSD לכתוב שתי עבודות עבודות דוקטורט בו זמנית, אחת על השפה האנגלית, והשנייה על שפת הנבאחו.

היא המציאה את השפה המהונדסת (סוג של שפה מתוכננת שנועדה להוכיח היפותזה לגבי אופן הפעולה של שפות) "לאאדן" (Láadan) עבור סדרת הספרים שלה, "שפת אם". מדריך לשוני ללאאדן, עם מילון, פורסם ב-1985. היא תמכה במדע בדיוני פמיניסטי, וטענה ש"נשים צריכות להבין כי מדע בדיוני הוא הז'אנר הספרותי היחיד בו סופרת יכולה לבחון את השאלה כיצד ייראה העולם אם ניפטר מ-[X], כאשר את המשתנה [X] אפשר להחליף בכל אחד משפע העובדות מהעולם האמיתי שמגבילות ומדכאות נשים. נשים צריכות לנצור ולתמוך במדע בדיוני."

אלגין כתבה רומנים מסוגת מדע בדיוני, בעיקר בשלוש הסדרות "שפת אם", "קויוטה ג'ונס" ו"סדרת הרי האוזארק". האחרונה שאבה במיוחד מהמורשת המשפחתית שלה בהרי האוזארק. בנוסף, כתבה סיפורים קצרים, שירה, וכן עבודות עיוניות בתחום הבלשנות, ובעיקר על ההשפעה של שפה והשימוש הפרקטי בה, פמיניזם, ועל חיי דו-קיום בשלום עם הטבע.

אלגין הייתה פרופסור בסגל אוניברסיטת סן דייגו, ויצאה לגמלאות בשנת 1980. היא עברה לארקנסו עם בעלה השני, ג'ורג' אלגין. היא נפטרה ב-2015 בגיל 78.
