Nir Gess Honorary Consul of the republic of Malawi in the state of Israel Born on February 24, 1958 in Afula,Israel Nir Gess is an Israeli entrepreneur and businessman operating internationally and mainly in Africa.

1. Biography

Nir was born and raised in Moshav Nir Yaffeh in the Biblical region as a sixth child of a family of immigrants from Tunisia. His father Haim was born in Tunis. He met Emilia from the Sialom family from Italy and they married. They gave birth to ten children, 4 of them were girls. One year after his parents and five older brothers immigrated to Israel Nir was born, in February 1958. His father was an activist in the Jewish Agency for Israel and helped other families who immigrated to Israel after him. Later on, he completed exterminators’ course, worked at the Gilboa Regional Council and became director of the Gilboa Sanitation Department until his retirement. Haim Gess passed away in 2007. In addition to Hebrew, Nir learnt French language in his parents' home. Nir attended elementary school in Nir Yaffeh and then moved to the Wizo Nir HaEmek Agricultural School in AFULAl. His name – Nir - was to symbolize the desire of his parents to start a new life in Israel and to give Israeli name to their first child, born in this country. His mother Emilia, a pharmacist by profession, did not practice in Israel but devoted herself to raising her children.

Nir is the younger brother of Brigadier General (Res.) Jacob Guaz (Gez) who passed away in 2019.

2. Military and security service

On 06.02.1976 Nir enlisted in the IDF and volunteered for the Shaked patrol. Nir fought in the 1978 South Lebanon conflict and took part in the operation rescuing the hostages during the hijacking of the Coastal Highway bus, also known as the Bloody Bus (terrorist attack carried out on March 11, 1978 by terrorists of the Palestinian organization Fatah in which 35 Israelis were murdered and 71 wounded). Afterwards he went on an infantry officer course and having completed it served as military instructor in the IDF officers’ school 1.

In August 1978 Nir joined Unit 669 and served as operational officer. On October 11, 1979, Nir was discharged from the IDF with the rank of lieutenant and joined the Prime Minister's Office in the personal security unit, where he served including but not limited, as the security guard of Prime Minister Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Shamir, and as the security guard of Ariel Sharon. Later on, he became the commander of the security unit. In 1983 he was appointed El Al security officer in Paris. Nir is doing his reserve service as part of the IDF Spokesperson's Unit and Southern Command till this day.

3. Business, politics and philanthropy

Receiving a Goodwill Ambassador's title in Uganda In 1988, Nir left the Department of Defense in favor of business activity in West Africa, first in Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo and then in Sierra Leone. In 1992, he had to leave Sierra Leone where he lived with his family because of a bloody civil war that broke out there and lasted almost 10 years. From Sierra Leone Nir moved to Miami (from 1992 to 2004) and started business activity. During these years, Nir assisted the US authority Drug Enforcement Administration in its war against drugs. In 2004, Nir decided to return to Israel which becomes the basis of his activity. Nir uses his extensive connections among African leaders to promote relations between African countries in various ways. Business and Philanthropic Activities:

Nir has got thirty years of experience in Africa. This experience gives him a great advantage in promoting projects that integrate business and philanthropy for local communities and population. Since then, Nir has been mainly engaged in business entrepreneurship in Africa in the field of agricultural development and water management.

1) Mapping underground water reservoirs in Malawi financed by the World Bank. 2) Raising fish in cages in Lake Malawi in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture 3) Growing vegetables in greenhouses, the largest agricultural project of its kind in Africa 4) Promoting early internet awareness in the school and kindergarten in Malawi, as a part of this project tablets were provided to children


4. Personal life In 1980 Nir married Orly Noy, whom he met during their military service. The couple has four children and two grandchildren.

His close ties with government officials in Africa help Nir promote philanthropic ventures. As a result of this activity, he was appointed Ambassador of Goodwill of the Government of Uganda. In this activity, Nir, in collaboration with other entities, promotes education, nature conservation and wildlife projects in Uganda, as well as many activities linking local government to government officials in Israel in informal and completely discreet way. As a tribute to his work in Malawi he was nomitaed as Honorary Consul of the republic of Malawi in the state of Israel his nomination ceremony was held on June 8th 2020 in Jerusalm.
