Desktop improvements. A new change!

I'm writing on behalf of the WMF Web team that's developing the Desktop Improvements. Your wiki is among early adopting projects. This means your community and readers are able to see the changes first.

The upcoming week (21-24 September) we will move the search widget to the header (by the logo). The widget will be in a more prominent location, more easy to find, and more difficult to forget where it is. Later, we will run tests where only a half of tested users will see the widget in the new location. Hopefully, these users will search more often, and the widget will stay in the header. You can learn more on a page dedicated for the search widget improvements.

If your community uses non-wiki channels of communication widely, please let me know so I could post this information there, or just feel free to share the news by yourself.

Same problem for me. It looks like when I am logged-out, the search box is always placed at its new location (like it should be), but when I am logged-in I only rarely see the new change, at some random occasions. ‏Guycn2 · ☎‏ 22:20, 2 באוקטובר 2020 (IDT)

Hi, IKhitron and Guycn2.
This isn't supposed to work like that. It's possible that the issue is on your side, and that it's not a bug which would affect a wider part of users. You may be able to see the widget in different locations depending on your status (logged in/out) and wiki you're browsing. This is because of the A/B tests. We're measuring if the widget move results in the increase of searches. This affects only logged in users on a few wikis, including Hebrew Wikipedia. But when you're logged in for good and you're not switching between various wikis, you should see the widget in one place (either moved or not). In any case, the A/B tests will be over soon, I believe in next week, and then the widget will be placed in the new location only. Of course, there's a slight risk that making the widget visible results in the decrease of searches - then, some time later, we'll move the widget back. SGrabarczuk, thank you for the detailed answer. I have enabled the new Vector in all wikis (through Global Preferences), and I have noticed that in other wikis the search widget is always placed in the new location. I realize there are multiple combinations, so I'll break them down using a flowchart-like formatting.
So this should work as follows. At least, this is the intention, because browser caching and such are beyond our influence:

• if you're on Hebrew Wikipedia or any of 5 other pilot (early adopting) wikis, such as French or Basque Wikipedias
  • and you are logged in
    • and you haven't disable the Desktop Improvements - you are in one of two groups - you're supposed to see the widget either in the new or in the old location, and this isn't supposed to change between pages on the same wiki. The tests are performed until Wednesday, October 14, and then everyone will have the same experience - the widget in the new location
    • and you have disabled the Desktop Improvements - you just enjoy the old Vector
  • and you are logged out - you can only see the search in the new location, because, sadly, it's impossible to run A/B tests on readers
• if you are on any other wiki
  • and you are logged in
    • and you have enabled the Desktop Improvements (e.g. via Global Preferences) - you can only see the search in the new location, because we don't run the A/B test there
    • and you haven't enabled the Desktop Improvements - you just enjoy the old Vector
  • and you are logged out - you just enjoy the old Vector

IKhitron, I'm sorry to admit that, but this is because we extended the period of A/B testing. Due to a technical error in the settings, we were forced to do the test again. תבנית:קישור לקטגוריה אם צריך - הסוף לקישורים הריקים לקטגוריה (או לפחות שיפור)

היי. להרבה משתמשים ישנם רשימות של קטגוריות בהם הם נוהגים לעיין ולעקוב אחריהם, אבל עד היום לא הייתה דרך נוחה לדעת מראש האם יש דפים בקטגוריה או לא, לשם כך יצרנו את {{קישור לקטגוריה אם צריך}}.

אז איך משתמשים בה? פשוט מאוד. נניח שאנחנו רוצים לקשר לקטגוריה:דפים שמשתמשים בפרמטרים כפולים בקריאות לתבניות‏‏, אבל רוצים שהקישור יופיע רק אם יש בקטגוריה ערכים. כל מה שנצטרך לעשות הוא להשתמש בקוד . רוצים לדעת כמה דפים יש בקטגוריה לפני שאתם נכנסים? הוסיפו |ספירה=כן. (לעוד פונקציות כנסו לדף התבנית).

קישורים ליומנים
