ישראל קליינר הוא מתמטיקאי קנדי וחוקר ההיסטוריה של המתמטיקה.

קליינר קיבל את הדוקטורט שלו ב-1967 מאוניברסיטת מקגיל בהנחייתו של יואכים למברק, כשכותרת עבודת התזה שלו Lie modules and rings of quotients.[1] קליינר היה פרופסור למתמטיקה באוניברסיטת יורק החל מ-1965, ושם היה אחראי על תוכנית הלימודים למורים למתמטיקה. הוא ידוע בשל עבודתו על היסטוריה של האלגברה ועל לימודיו בתחומי המתמטיקה וההיסטוריה של המתמטיקה.
הוא זכה בפרס קרל אלנדורפר ב-1987 על מאמרו על התפתחות תורת הקבוצות ופעם נוספת ב-1992 על מאמרו הסוקר את ההתפתחות של הוכחות קבילות במתמטיקה. ב-1990 זכה בפרס ג'ורג' פוליה על מאמרו על התפתחות מושג הפונקציה, וב-1995 זכה בפרס לסטר רנדולף פורד, יחד עם נצה מובשוביץ-הדר. באמצע העשור הראשון של המאה ה-21 היה סגן נשיא של האגודה הקנדית לפילוסופיה והיסטוריה של המתמטיקה.
