Spanish, 3rd quarter 16th c. Bezoar, gold, emeralds, rubies.
The bezoar, a gasrolith (stomach stone) from goats and llamas, has been used as a curative against poison, epilepsy and melancholy since antiquity. It was often put on golden chains or in vessels, as it was supposed to prove its healing powers in drinks. Here, the precious base emphasises the importance of this particularly large stone both as medicine and Kunstkammer object.
