מודל הארץ השטוחה הוא תפיסה ישנה ומופרכת של צורת הארץ, הרואה אותה כמשטח מישורי או בצורת דיסק. תרבויות עתיקות רבות החזיקו בתפיסה הזו של מודל הארץ, כולל יוון עד לתקופה הקלאסית, תרבויות הברונזה והברזל של המזרח הקרוב עד לתקופה ההלניסטית, הודו עד לתקופת הגופטה, וסין עד המאה ה-17.

הפרדיגמה הזאת הייתה גם בדרך כלל מוחזקת בתרבויות של הילידים האמריקאים, והמושג של ארץ שטוחה עם שמים בצורת קערה הפוכה היה נפוץ בתקופה שקדמה למהפכה המדעית.[1]

מודל הארץ ככדור הופיע לראשונה בפילוסופיה היוונית על ידי פיתגורס (המאה ה-6 לפנה"ס),[4] אם כי לא סופקו למודל זה ראיות ממשיות, ורוב הפילוסופים הקדם סוקרטים (המאות ה-6 וה-5 לפנה"ס) המשיכו להחזיק בתפיסת מודל הארץ השטוחה. אריסטו החל לספק ראיות אמפיריות לצורה הכדורית של הארץ בסביבות שנת 330 לפנה"ס. הידיעה על צורתה הכדורית של הארץ החלה בהדרגה להתפשט מעבר לעולם ההלניסטי מאז ואילך.[5][6][7][8]

בעידן המודרני, תאוריות על הארץ שטוחה מאומצות על ידי ארגונים פסאודו מדעיים[9] כגון אגודת הארץ השטוחה.

היסטוריה

במזרח הקדום

בחשיבה המצרית העתיקה[10] ובקרב אנשי מסופוטמיה, העולם הוצג כדיסק שצף במרחבי האוקיינוס. מודל דומה נמצא בשירת הומרוס מהמאה ה-8 לפנה"ס, שכתב: "אוקיינוס, המים המקיפים את פני המישור העגול של הארץ, הוא המכיל של כל החיים ואפשר גם שמכיל את כל האלים".[11]

טקסטים הכתובים על הפירמידות וטקסטים על ארונות קבורה במצרים העתיקה מצביעים אף הם על קוסמוגרפיה דומה: אוקיינוס מקיף שטחים יבשים או איים.[12][13][14]

בתנ"ך קיימים אזכורים לכך שלארץ ולשמים יש ארבעה קצוות,[15] ומצד שני אין ציון לכך שהארץ היא כדור.[16] מתוך הנחה שהקוסמולוגיה העברית הייתה דומה לזו של שאר תרבויות המזרח הקדום, החוקרים סבורים כי גם בארץ ישראל דמיינו את הארץ כדיסק צף על פני המים, כאשר רקיע בצורת קערה הפוכה הפריד את הארץ מן השמים.[17][18][19]

בתלמוד ניתן להבין מסוגיות שונות הנידונות בו כי חז"ל תפשו את הארץ כשטוחה, ונחלקו בשאלות כגון האם צורתה עגולה או ריבועית ומהו עוביו של הרקיע.[20][21]

באחת מאגדות רבה בר בר חנה הוא סיפר כי ביקר במקום שבו הרקיע והארץ נפגשים, ואף איבד את סלו שהטמין באחד מחלונות הרקיע, ומצא אותו למחרת באותה שעה, כשכיפת הרקיע חזרה לאותו מקום.[22]

מדברי רבנו חננאל שחי במאה העשירית משתמע שהארץ שטוחה, מאחר ותמך בדעת חז"ל שהשמש נעה בלילה מעל לרקיע, וביום תחתיו, בעוד בין עלות השחר לזריחה וכן בין השקיעה לצאת הכוכבים היא ”מהלכת בעביו של רקיע”. לדבריו: ”ואף על פי שהחוזים בכוכבים שבזמן הזה מדברים דברים המכחישין – לא משגחינן להו אלא אנו מזהרים דברי רבותינו כתקנם ולא לחוש לדברי זולתם”.[23]

במאה ה-12 כבר ידועות התייחסויות רבניות לארץ כאל כדור, לדוגמה הרמב"ם השתמש במעלות כדי לציין מיקום על קווי רוחב ואורך,[24] והרב זרחיה הלוי עסק בנושא קו התאריך בהלכה. עם זאת, הרמב"ן בן המאה ה-13 הביא בפירושו את מודל הארץ השטוחה לצד מודל שייחס ליוונים המציג את הארץ ככדור יבשה שחציו שקוע במים,[25] בדומה למודל שהוצג בתלמוד הירושלמי.[26]

ביוון העתיקה

פילוסופים

היו כמה פילוסופים קדם-סוקראטיים שהאמינו שהעולם שטוח: תאלס (המאה ה-6 לפנה"ס) על פי מספר מקורות,[28] לוקיפוס (המאה ה-5 לפנה"ס), ולפי אריסטו גם דמוקריטוס (בן המאה ה-4).[29][30][31]

תאלס חשב שהאדמה צפה במים כמו בול עץ.[32] עם זאת, נטען כי תאלס למעשה האמין שכדור הארץ הוא בעצם עגול.[33][34] אנכסימנדרוס (המאה ה-6 לפנה"ס) האמין שכדור הארץ הוא גליל קצר בעל ראש עגול שטוח שנותר יציב משום שהוא נמצא באמצע היקום, במרחק שווה מכל שאר הדברים.[35][36] אנכסימנס האמין ש"הארץ שטוחה ומרחפת באוויר, באותו אופן שבו השמש והירח ושאר גרמי השמים מרחפים, שכולם לוהטים מחום, ומרחפים באוויר בגלל המשטחיות שלהם".[37] קסנופנס (תחילת המאה ה-5 לפנה"ס) סבר כי כדור הארץ שטוח, כאשר צדו העליון נוגע באוויר, והצד התחתון נמתח למטה ללא גבול.[38]

האמונה שהארץ היא שטוחה המשיכה להתקיים גם במהלך המאה ה-5 לפנה"ס. לדוגמה אנכסגורס (450 לפנה"ס) הסכים כי הארץ היא שטוחה,[39] ותלמידו ארכלאוס האמין כי הארץ השטוחה מורדת באמצע כמו צלחת, כדי להסביר את העובדה שהשמש לא זורחת וקורנת באותו זמן על כל העולם.[40] עם זאת, כבר בשנת 500 לפנה"ס קיבלו רוב הפילוסופיים היווניים את דעתו של פיתגורס שהארץ היא כדור, ובמאה ה-4 לפנה"ס הציע אריסטו את הראיות הפיזיקליות הראשונות לכך. במאה ה-3 לפנה"ס חישב ארטוסתנס את היקפו של כדור הארץ ברמה גבוהה למדיי של דיוק.[41]

היסטוריונים

הקטאיוס ממילטוס האמין שהארץ שטוחה ומוקפת במים.[42] הרודוטוס בספר ההיסטוריה שלו לעג לאמונה שהמים מקיפים את העולם,[43] אך אף על פי כן רוב החוקרים מסכימים שהוא האמין שהארץ שטוחה בגלל תיאוריו על ה"סוף" או על ה"קצה" של הארץ.[44]

משוררים

כאשר משוררים כהומרוס[45] והסיודוס[46] תיארו את צורת העולם, הם תיארו דיסק בצורת מגינו של אכילס - הגיבור היווני המיתולוגי.[47][48]

מסורת פואטית זו של אוקיינוס אינסופי המקיף את הארץ שבצורת דיסק מופיעה גם אצל המשוררים סטסינוס,[49] מימנארמוס,[50] אייסכילוס,[51] ואפולוניוס מרודוס.[52]

תיאורו הקוסמוגרפי של הומרוס על הצורה הדיסקית של מגן אכילס עם האוקיינוס הסובב אותו חוזר על עצמו מאוחר יותר ב"פוסטומריקה" של קוינטוס סמירנאוס (המאה ה-4), הממשיך את תיאור סיפור מלחמת טרויה.[53]

באירופה

העמים הנורדים והגרמאניים הקדמונים האמינו בכך שהארץ היא שטוחה כאשר היא מוקפת באוקיינוס מכל הכיוונים, וציר העולם, עץ העולם (יגדראסיל), או העמוד הגדול (אראמינסול) נמצא במרכזה.[54][55] באוקיינוס המקיף את הארץ ישב נחש בשם יורמונגנד.[56] חשבון הבריאה הנורדי שהשתמר בגילפאגינינג מהאדה פרוזאית קובע שבמהלך הבריאה של הארץ הונח סביבו ים עצום שלא ניתן לחצות אותו.

וכך נאמר שם על ידי ויאפנהר: ”מן הדם, אשר נטף בחופשיות מן פצעיהם, הם יצרו את הים, ויצרו והחזיקו את הארץ יחד איתה, והניחו את הים כטבעת מסביב לארץ, וזה יכול להראות דבר קשה עבור רוב האנשים לחצות אותו”.[57]

ב"בבואת המלך" (Konungs skuggsjá) - ספר מהמיתולוגיה הנורדית המתוארך לסביבות שנת 1250, כבר הוסק שצורת הארץ היא כדורית.[58]
