The Cristobal Colon made the longest run for liberty.Past the bay where her battered sisters, the Vizcaya andOquendo were lying, past the Maria Teresa smouldering onthe beach, the fleet cruiser held westward, evidently hopingto break through the lines and reach free water. She hadpassed the Iowa, the Indiana and the Texas, but could notshake off the Brooklyn and the Oregon, which were comingup with railroad speed. In spite of the twelve and thirteen-inch shells that rained upon the fleet cruiser, she kept on inthe low hanging smoke from her own guns and that whichdrifted inshore from her pursuers. The firing was incessant, and the Spanish Commander, hisship on fire at the stern, seeing the Oregon turning inshore tointercept him, altered his course as if to attempt to passbetween the Oregon and the Brooklyn and run for theopen sea. But it was not to be ; the Texas and the Oregon wereclosing the gap between themselves and the doomedship, firing at long range, and the Brooklyn was raking

The converted yacht Gloucester, did work that washeroic and astonishing. As the Vizcaya came out of the harbor, and passed into thestorm of shells from the battleships, she turned her secondarybattery on the Gloucester, who returned the fire with six-pound shells, and then trained her guns on the Oquendo andColon.
